The Story Behind Site Detection

We Built Site Detection Because We've Been There

A website can stop working at any time. The worst part is not always the outage — it's not knowing.

Site Detection started with a problem we experienced firsthand: websites would appear to be working normally, then suddenly they weren't. Sometimes the problem was discovered quickly. Sometimes it wasn't discovered until much later. And sometimes the first person to notice was someone trying to visit the website.

That experience led to a simple idea: business owners should know about website problems before their customers do.

How the Idea for Site Detection Started

Years before Site Detection existed, our founder hosted websites on third-party hosting platforms just like millions of businesses do today. Everything could appear normal until, without warning, something changed.

The Website Appeared Fine

There was no obvious warning that something was about to go wrong. The site was online, the server was running, and business continued as usual.

Then Something Broke

Over the years, the causes varied — server updates, security incidents, SSL failures, hosting issues, software problems, and other unexpected technical failures.

The Bigger Problem Was Discovery

Sometimes the issue was found within an hour. Sometimes much later. In some cases, the first indication came from someone attempting to visit the website.

That Led to a Better Question

Why should a website owner have to periodically visit their own website, wait for an employee to notice, or depend on a customer to report that something is wrong?

Site Detection Was Built to Provide Another Set of Eyes

Site Detection continuously monitors websites so business owners have an independent way to know when downtime is detected and can take action sooner.

“Your customers shouldn't be the ones telling you your website is down.” That belief is at the center of why Site Detection exists.

Your Website Is More Than an Online Brochure

For many businesses, the website is one of the first interactions a prospective customer has with the company. It is working long after the office closes and long before the next business day begins.

☎

Customers Need Information

Someone may be looking for your phone number, office hours, services, location, or contact details.

✎

Prospects Are Taking Action

A visitor may be submitting a contact form, requesting an estimate, or trying to schedule an appointment.

Business Can Be Lost

A customer may be researching your company, comparing options, or trying to make a purchase when the website fails.

If the website doesn't load, displays an error, has an SSL problem, or becomes unavailable, the visitor may never tell you. They may simply move on.
Our Mission
Help businesses discover website problems before their customers do.

Site Detection was created to give website owners something extremely valuable: peace of mind. You have a business to run. You should not have to spend the day wondering whether your website is still working.

Technology Has Been Part of the Story From the Beginning

Site Detection was founded by Sharam Ahrony, a technology professional whose experience with Internet technologies began long before websites became an everyday part of doing business.

His fascination with networking and the Internet started at 17 years old. At a time when connecting to remote computer systems was not as simple as opening a browser or joining Wi-Fi, he figured out how to connect to his college's computing infrastructure using a dial-up modem and a Linux system.

That early curiosity developed into decades of hands-on work with websites, servers, hosting environments, DNS, networking, Linux systems, cloud infrastructure, software development, cybersecurity, and related technologies.

But Site Detection was not created simply because we understand the technology behind websites. It was created because we understand what happens to a business when that technology fails.

Your Website Never Really Closes

A physical office may close at the end of the day. Your website keeps representing your business around the clock.

2:00 PM

A customer may be looking for your phone number or checking your services.

8:00 PM

A prospective customer may be researching your company after your office has closed.

Midnight

Someone may be submitting a contact form while you are asleep.

6:00 AM

A customer may be trying to make a purchase before your workday even begins.

If your website is unavailable during any of those moments, you may never know who tried to reach you or how much business was lost.

Website Downtime Can Happen for Countless Reasons

Some problems are within your control. Others are not. What you can control is how quickly you become aware that something is wrong.

Hosting & Infrastructure

Hosting outages, server failures, overloaded infrastructure, and network problems can make a website unavailable.

Changes & Updates

Server updates, configuration changes, software deployments, plugins, or application changes can cause unexpected failures.

DNS & SSL

DNS problems or SSL certificate failures can prevent visitors from reaching or safely using your website.

Applications & Databases

An application, database, WordPress plugin, or other website component can fail while the underlying server remains online.

Security Incidents

A compromised website or server can create availability and trust problems that need immediate attention.

Human Error

A routine change can sometimes have an unexpected consequence that leaves a website partially or completely unavailable.

A Simple Analogy

Your Website Is the Digital Front Door to Your Business

Imagine arriving at a business and finding the front door unexpectedly locked during normal business hours. You might wait. You might call. But there is a good chance you would simply go somewhere else.

A website outage can have exactly the same effect — except online, leaving takes less than a second. Your competitor may be only another search result or browser tab away.

That is why we do not look at website monitoring as simply another technical service. We look at it as protecting the digital front door to your business.

What Site Detection Is Designed to Do

Site Detection is a website uptime monitoring service that continuously checks website availability from outside your hosting environment, tracks response time and SSL certificate information, and sends an email, SMS, Slack, Teams, or Google Chat alert when downtime is detected. We built it to make website monitoring practical for businesses that need visibility without a complicated enterprise monitoring platform.
