What Is an IP Address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number that identifies your device or network on the internet, so information can be sent to and from you.

Every time you visit a website, your device and that website exchange data using IP addresses — a bit like a return address on an envelope. The address shown above is your public IP address: the one the outside world sees. Behind your router, your individual devices also have private IP addresses that are only used inside your own network.

Your public IP is how the internet reaches you. It's assigned by your internet provider and can be shared by everyone on the same network or connection.

Public vs. Private, IPv4 vs. IPv6

A few basics that clear up most of the confusion about IP addresses.

Public IP

Assigned by your internet provider and visible to the websites and services you connect to. That's the address shown at the top of this page.

Private IP

Used inside your home or office network (for example 192.168.0.10). It isn't visible on the public internet, so it won't appear here.

IPv4 vs. IPv6

IPv4 looks like 203.0.113.42. IPv6 is longer and uses colons (2001:db8::1). IPv6 exists because the world ran short of IPv4 addresses.

Why Your IP Address Matters

Your IP is a normal, everyday part of being online — and it's useful to understand.

It identifies your connection

Websites use your IP to send responses back to you and, in some cases, to apply rough regional settings or basic security checks.

It can change

Many providers use dynamic IPs that change over time. A VPN or switching to mobile data will also change the public IP that sites see.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my IP address?

Your public IP address is the unique number your internet connection uses to communicate on the internet. This page shows the public IP that websites and online services see when you connect to them.

What is the difference between a public and private IP address?

A public IP address is assigned by your internet provider and is visible to websites you visit. A private IP address is used inside your local network (for example 192.168.x.x) and is not visible on the public internet. This page shows your public IP.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 and are the older, most common format. IPv6 addresses are longer and use letters and colons (for example 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) and were introduced because the world is running out of IPv4 addresses.

Does this tool store my IP address?

This page simply reflects your public IP back to you in your browser. It does not ask for your email or require a signup to show your IP.

Why does my IP address change?

Many internet providers assign dynamic IP addresses that can change over time or when your router reconnects. Some connections use a static IP that stays the same. Using a VPN or mobile network will also change the public IP that websites see.
